Some of my all-time favorite sessions to shoot are formal sessions, whether it be an engagement session or a bridal/first look session. I just think that there is so much love between these new couples that you really cannot replicate or fake. Their love is so real and tangible and you can just see it in the sparkle in their eyes.
Couples that are so in love really can't take their eyes off of each other. That makes for fabulous pictures! You don't have to keep prompting them to gaze lovingly at each other, they just do it! The excitement between them, engagement or first bridals, makes ME excited.
The easiest way to make couples comfortable in front of the camera is to be comfortable behind the camera. I always have some prompt cards ready in case my mind goes blank, and they always come in clutch for me. Most of the time I usually just ask the couple about their lives; how they met, how he proposed, why they fell in love with each other, etc. If you ever get a couple that seems a little camera shy, or if in their posing they look stiff and awkward, I always try to tell them some ridiculous things that happen in my life on a daily basis. If I can get them laughing at stupid things I do, they tend to loosen up a little.
A lot of times those detail shots are the ones clients love the most. The flowers, the rings, the eyelashes. Those are the easy ones, I personally prefer all the candid, in-between moments. The ones where they are walking away from me, or laughing at something they or I said. The ones where they are just talking with each other or holding hands. Those are the magical moments that they will want to remember and treasure.
It is always a lot of pressure doing these types of photos because it is generally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the couple. But doesn't it make you feel so good and confident that they trusted you with this task!
